Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Beckton Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Beckton is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks, promoting safe working practices and complying with relevant health and safety legislation and industry guidance.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our gardening activities. We aim to identify and control risks associated with landscaping, lawn care, planting, pruning, clearance, waste handling and the use of machinery and gardening products. We will provide information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure work is carried out safely and responsibly at all times.
Management is responsible for implementing this policy, ensuring that appropriate resources are available and reviewing performance regularly. All employees and subcontractors are required to co-operate fully with this policy and to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Responsibilities
Senior management at Gardeners Beckton has overall responsibility for health and safety, including setting standards, approving procedures and ensuring compliance. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation on site, including briefing staff, checking equipment and monitoring working conditions.
Employees must follow all safety procedures, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, report hazards or incidents promptly and refrain from any behaviour that could put themselves or others at risk. Subcontractors working on behalf of Gardeners Beckton are expected to adhere to this policy and maintain equivalent health and safety standards.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before commencing work, suitable and sufficient risk assessments will be carried out for our gardening and landscaping tasks. These assessments will identify potential hazards such as uneven ground, slips and trips, working at height, manual handling, noise, dust, sharp tools, powered machinery, and the use of chemicals and garden products.
Control measures will be implemented to reduce risks to an acceptable level. This may include using appropriate tools for each task, establishing safe working zones, restricting access to hazardous areas, planning work in suitable weather conditions and scheduling tasks to minimise exposure to noise and vibration.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Beckton will ensure that all staff receive suitable training for their roles. This includes induction training covering general health and safety responsibilities, as well as task-specific training for activities such as hedge trimming, tree work, use of lawn mowers and other powered equipment, handling of garden waste and safe use of ladders and access equipment.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered machinery or carry out higher-risk activities. Supervisors will provide ongoing guidance, check that safe systems of work are being followed and offer additional instruction where required. Refresher training will be provided when necessary, including when new equipment or methods of work are introduced.
Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
All tools, machinery and vehicles used by Gardeners Beckton must be suitable for the task, properly maintained and inspected regularly. Defective or damaged equipment must be taken out of use immediately and reported so that repairs or replacements can be arranged. Manufacturer instructions and safety recommendations will be followed at all times.
Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided and used where needed. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, helmets for specific tasks and weather-appropriate clothing. Employees are responsible for using their protective equipment correctly and reporting any loss or damage.
Safe Working Practices in Gardens and Outdoor Areas
When working in gardens, communal grounds or other outdoor spaces, our teams will take care to maintain safe access routes and minimise disruption to clients and the public. Work areas will be organised to avoid unnecessary obstructions, and where necessary warning signs or barriers will be used to highlight potential hazards such as open excavations, trailing hoses or machinery in operation.
Particular attention will be given to working near roads, driveways, shared pathways and entrances. Staff will be instructed to be aware of vehicles, cyclists, children, pets and passers-by, and to stop work immediately if there is any risk of harm to others.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Care
Where gardening products such as fertilisers, weed control substances or other chemicals are used, Gardeners Beckton will follow safe handling and application procedures. Relevant safety data information will be consulted and appropriate control measures, including personal protective equipment and storage arrangements, will be implemented.
We are committed to minimising environmental impact by using responsible gardening practices, encouraging sustainable methods and disposing of green waste and other materials safely and in line with applicable requirements.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Landscaping and gardening often involve lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive tasks. To reduce the risk of strains and other injuries, staff will receive guidance on safe manual handling techniques, use of lifting aids where available and the importance of working within their physical capabilities.
Heavy or awkward loads will be shared where possible, and tasks will be rotated to reduce prolonged repetitive movements. Staff are encouraged to report any discomfort or early signs of injury so that workloads and methods can be reviewed.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported promptly to a supervisor so that appropriate action can be taken. This may include providing first aid, arranging medical support, investigating the circumstances, recording findings and implementing measures to prevent a recurrence.
Lessons learned from incidents will be communicated to our teams and used to improve our procedures, training and risk controls. We aim to foster a culture where reporting safety concerns is encouraged and acted upon positively.
Monitoring, Review and Policy Updates
Gardeners Beckton will monitor health and safety performance through site checks, equipment inspections, training records and incident reports. This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to ensure it remains effective, relevant to our gardening services and in line with current legislation and industry good practice.
Where necessary, the policy and related procedures will be updated and communicated to all employees and subcontractors. By working together to apply this policy, Gardeners Beckton aims to provide safe, reliable and responsible gardening services for all our clients.
